Under 10 A's 6 - Worton & Chev Badgers 1

Are we Champions?

Highbury under 10’s ‘A’ Team played their final game of the league season at home to Worton & Chev Badgers on Sunday the 02nd of May 2010.

This was a game that nothing less than a win could give them a chance of winning the league, should other results go their way.

The game started with Highbury having more possession of the ball, but with Worton creating the better of the chances.  Lyndon Parmley carried on his fine form and made a couple of important saves to keep Worton out.  After about 10 mins, Highbury won themselves a corner and somehow after attacking the Worton goal, they found themselves 0-1 down.  Worton managed to clear a high ball up the field which caught the Highbury defence ball watching, rather than spotting the danger and dealing with it.  The opposing player was clear away on goal and slotted the ball home leaving Parmley with no chance.

After going 0-1 down this managed to spur the Highbury boy’s on after a poor scrappy first 10 minutes and produce the type of football that they are capable of playing.

Highbury picked up the pace and found themselves level after Joe Hardy won and scrapped for the ball in the box.  He managed to stab the ball towards goal and away from the Worton defenders, only to see Luke Woods come running in and make sure that the ball was going over the line 1-1.

Joe Hardy didn’t have to wait long to get his reward after a long throw was played into the box from Louis Cole, Joe was first to react and headed the ball to score with ease to put his team 2-1 up.

Highbury went 3-1 up just before half time after Adam Clark won the ball in defence and quickly set Luke Woods away down the left flank, who then turned in towards goal and nestled his well driven strike into the bottom right corner of the net leaving the away team in shock.  Highbury were buzzing, much to the frustration of the Battling Badgers team who were relieved to hear the half time whistle.

The 2nd half started with the away team determined to somehow get back into the game.  However, the Highbury defenders carried on their great form and were in no mood to let things slip.  Thomas McFerran was winning his challenges and releasing the ball early, Harry Guerri Fear was closing down the attacking players early and not giving them a second on the ball with his tight marking.  Adam Clark was sweeping up at the back with ease cancelling out anything that managed to get through towards goal.  Louis Cole had his normal menacing game in midfield, never giving the opponents a moment’s peace on the ball.  It was after one of his mazy runs down the right wing and then cutting in towards goal, he hit a shot which bounced just before the goalie and into the net 4-1.  Highbury continued to flourish, Chay Andrews was working hard up and down the left flank winning his tackles, pressurising his opponents and he was the most vocal player on the pitch screaming at his players to pass the ball to him as he found himself on a few occasions free and in space – Unfortunately the ball never came. Liam Gibbons worked hard in midfield – Harassing his opponents and forcing then into making errors.

The game was coming to an end but Luke Woods managed to grab his hat trick with another well struck shot, low and hard into the corner of the net to make it 5-1.  As Highbury continued to pressure they won a corner. The ball was drilled into the box and the Highbury players were running in on goal to attack the ball but it was infact put into the net by the away team. An own goal finished the scoring making it 6-1.

This result may be enough to win the league – a possible double.  We’ll just have to wait for other results to come in and hopefully in our favour – Watch this space
