U11Blacks 3 Larkhall Athletic 1

Highbury Blacks secured their place in the Quarter Finals of the League Cup with a thrilling home win against Larkhall Athletic.  Early pressure paid off after Reece Collier fired in a low cross for Kurt Wilson to volley the ball home from just inside the box. Highbury camped in the visitors half and were looking for their second when they were caught on the break.  Charlie Dillon was robbed of the ball by three Larkhall players who exchanged a few quick passes before running in on goal from the right channel.  Although against the run of play, it was quality football by the visitors. Highbury bit back with a barrage of attacks only to be denied by the outstanding Larkhall keeper. Brandon Thompson, Chris Office and Luke Hardy were all left scratching their heads having been denied by a succession of brilliant saves.  Before the break George Findlay and Sam Thomas both went close having beaten the Larkhall offside trap.  The second half began with another quality strike from Kurt Wilson to put Highbury back in the lead following some calm defending and quick thinking by Edward Priestley and Dewaka Gurung.  Larkhall abandoned their passing game and searched for the equaliser by hitting it long, but for the brilliance of Luke Slater in the Highbury goal they would have got it. Repeatedly Luke Slater denied the visitors with a string of first class keeping. With the game precariously balanced Sam Rabczek produced the move of the game.  He won the ball in the centre circle and delivered the killer pass across the width of the park into the path of the lightning Ross Melia who left his markers for dust before squeezing the ball underneath the impressive Larkhall keeper.   It was a passage of play direct from the training ground that effectively sealed the win.  There was still time for the visiting keeper to frustrate Highbury with yet more unbelievable stops but it is Highbury who deservedly go through to the next round of the League Cup.    M.o.M.
